Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a noxious and hazardous compound for human health. Bisphenol A is the major constituent for the production of polycarbonate plastic. Polycarbonate plastic is mainly used in the lining and packing of plastics as well as in the manufacturing of infant baby bottles, drinking water bottles, beverage containers for storage of food items, kitchen utensils etc. BPA leaching is mainly analyzed by gas chromatography GC, HPLC, GC or LC coupled with mass spectrometry and it has been indicated that BPA can leach out from PC containers into the food items such as milk and food items. When this plastic is exposed to high temperature like sunlight, hot liquids and microwave heating, the BPA content leaches into the food fifty five times faster than in normal conditions. BPA is mainly an endocrine hormonal disruptor and it’s prescribed as a synthetic estrogen. Recent studies suggested that bisphenol A is carcinogenic and affects the immune system. Different tests has been conducted on animals which demonstrated that BPA cause many problems related to obesity and infertility. Pregnant women and new born babies are also affected due to BPA exposure. The selling and manufacturing of polycarbonate products containing BPA such as the beverage containers, baby bottles, water bottles etc is also banned in many countries including Canada, Australia, Norway, China, Sweden and New Zealand. Whereas, in Pakistan, no measures are taken over the control of polycarbonate usage in manufacturing industries. It’s also necessary to provide awareness to people regarding use of plastic baby bottles and other plastic kitchen utensils
